How do you think about generosity?

I think of generosity as the act of giving of one’s time and money to help others who need and benefit from such assistance. While I am committed doing both, I find the greatest gratification in physically doing acts of kindness for those who really need help.
At the moment my wife and son are part of a team making 100 blankets to keep children warm in bed. As a family we are serving Christmas dinner at a local homeless shelter.

How do you work to inspire generosity in others?

We have been designed to glorify God, and each of us ultimately yearns to hear, “well done, good and faithful servant.” What better way to glorify God than to “sow bountifully” with our individual and collective time, talents and financial resources, and to do it joyfully. It is my deepest desire to be his hands and feet to inspire others, by my example, towards living generous lives.

What cause means the most to you?

I am an active mentor in a program called Future Men of Distinction, a mentoring program focused on enriching the lives of young men ages 11-18. The program focuses on academic, leadership, personal, and social development.
Each year the program takes in 20-30 young men with the purpose creating positive and sustainable change in their lives. This is personally fulfilling to me as I get to witness their growth and maturity.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from volunteering?

That you don’t have to be an expert—you don’t even have to be very creative. You just have to be willing and able. Bono from U2 once said to just get in line with what God is already doing.
After all, volunteering is an expression of thanks to God and an expression of faith in what he has provided.

Who inspires you to be more generous?

My wife. She always finds time to help with clothing drives and collecting donations to stock food pantries. She also makes holiday baskets for the disenfranchised and toiletry baskets for the elderly on a regular basis. She inspires me as well as my four children!

What does generosity mean to you?

It's easy to hear "generosity" and think "giving." While the two are related, I believe giving is an action and generosity is a lifestyle. Working every day to be more financially wise—moving from struggling to surplus—not just for your family, but to help others support their own...that's generosity.

How do you think generosity changes lives?

If done right, generosity empowers people to grow and change. Generosity does not have to be expensive or complicated, a simple smile or compliment can make a person’s day.

How does faith play a part in your generosity?

I think God has called us to live generously for the betterment of our families, communities, and world.
For me this has taken the form of being a Sunday School teacher, Scout leader, Red Cross instructor, playing piano and trumpet for our church and supporting their technology needs, starting a non-profit to fight homelessness in the Fox Valley, and supporting the work of missionaries both locally and globally.

How do you like to give back to the community?

I am a volunteer basketball coach for Minneapolis youth. I really enjoy promoting the values of teamwork and sportsmanship.
My main goal–beyond teaching the game of basketball–is to encourage them to grow into mature, well-rounded people in their adult lives.

How has giving back enriched your life?

I had an interesting upbringing centered around giving back, in that my parents always invited others to share our home, from foreign exchange students to foster kids.
It has really opened my eyes to the fact that everyone comes from different walks of life and, by listening, providing guidance and showing love, you can truly make an impact in someone’s life.

How has working at Thrivent impacted your style of giving back?

My family did not practice giving back. Everything I’ve learned about it has come from working here.
This organization has given me excellent role models to follow and many opportunities to give back—including using hours during the workday and providing company volunteer activities. How fabulous is that?

How do you bring creativity to your generosity?

I’m a firm believer that whatever talents you have are what you should put toward giving back. I personally am a skilled story-teller and educator, so it helps tremendously that I also love children.
Knowing that there are children out there who don’t have someone to play pretend with them or help them with their homework, it is so clear the way in which I’m meant to put my creative talents to use.

Which community are you passionate about helping?

I’m passionate about helping people affected by homelessness. I feel a lot of people look down on them, so when I’m volunteering at a shelter, I hope that I can make them feel that someone cares about them by being respectful and caring.
I even founded a charitable project called Giving + Art, dedicated to helping homeless people using funds I get through selling my paintings and art/textiles/clothing donated by affiliates.

How has giving back enriched your life?

Volunteering replenishes my energy; I love working for a company that strongly supports giving back both corporately and personally.
From carrying enough concrete blocks to build an entire home for a family in Romania to installing stairs for a family in Wisconsin that had recently gone through a tragic loss, I’ve had the opportunity to do things as a volunteer that I might never have done with people I might never have known.

Which area of generosity would you like to nurture in your own life?

My family currently gives back to the community through charitable donations and helping at a local consignment shop that benefits people who need money, clothing, or household items. But I have heard wonderful stories and seen amazing pictures from Thrivent Builds Worldwide, so I look forward to joining one of those trips in the future.

What cause would you bring more awareness to if you could?

Housing first. People who are experiencing homelessness can soar once they have a permanent safe and secure place to call home. The smiles and hugs from folks I’ve assisted in finding housing and witnessing the soaring has enriched my life.
